In 1993, 26014 was purchased by class 26 preservation group, although it was sometime later that it arrived on railway owing to some problems getting it released by BR. This loco required major work such as a power unit swap with 26026s unit and the cab equipment rebuilding, following disruption post asbestos removal. This loco was quickly restored and became the first class 26 to work in preservation.
